Portman Ranked #2 of
All Candidates in Wall
Street Donations, Nearly
$400K this Cycle
COLUMBUS – In an
ABCNews.com/Center for
Responsive Politics analysis
of financial industry
contributions to senatorial
campaign fundraising arms
released yesterday,
Congressman Rob Portman is
ranked #2 in donations
received from Wall Street
this cycle ($394,096). Last
month, as the U.S. Senate
passed landmark legislation
to rein in reckless Wall
Street abuses and protect
consumers, Congressman Rob
Portman took the side of
special interests instead of
Ohioans and publically
opposed efforts to hold
Wall Street accountable.
“As Wall Street’s second
highest beneficiary, how can
Congressman Portman ever be
expected to stand up for
Main Street?” said Ohio
Democratic Party Chairman
Chris Redfern. “It should
come as no surprise that
Congressman Portman opposes
landmark legislation to
reform Wall Street and curb
reckless abuses that led to
the national recession.”
As the Stephen Koff of the
Plain Dealer noted, “Portman
makes K Street all-star
list. Lobbyists really,
really like him.” [Cleveland
Plain Dealer,
7/14/10] Portman tops
the list for Republicans
with $223,849 accepted from
lobbyists this cycle.
Congressman Portman is the
only recipient in the top 12
who is not a current
office-holder in Washington. |

MUST READ:
Columbus Dispatch:
Dems have winning
attitude for Nov. 2
COLUMBUS- The
Columbus Dispatch
analyzed Democratic
enthusiasm, optimism and
organizational strength
going into November’s
election.
Excerpts of the
Columbus Dispatch
article follow:
"Taking the dais last
night at the Greater
Columbus Convention
Center for the Ohio
Democratic Party's
annual fundraising
dinner, Gov. Ted
Strickland pumped his
fist in the air and told
the crowd, 'We're going
to win this election.'"
"Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher,
the Democratic nominee
for U.S. Senate, said
former President George
W. Bush and other
Republicans drove the
country into a ditch
'and now they want the
keys back. We say, 'No
way!'"
"After delivering the
keynote address, former
Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine,
chairman of the
Democratic National
Committee, crowed about
the strength of the Ohio
Democratic Party, saying
Republicans 'have reason
to worry about it.'"
…
"So, why all the
optimism at the dinner
attended by 2,256 of the
faithful, most of whom
apparently didn't get
the memo about their
enthusiasm gap?"
"Despite an adverse
political climate and
the historical
midterm-election jinx
for the party in power,
Ohio Democrats think
they can win Nov.2 on
the strength of their
organization."
"'We've been building
this thing here for the
past five years,' said
Doug Kelly, the state
party's executive
director. 'We're
organized in every
single county and
community across the
state with an ongoing,
sustained presence. We
have a committed,
dedicated core group of
people.'"
"Against the odds, Kelly
and other Democratic
officials think they
have created an
organizational model
that will lead to
success well beyond the
Nov. 2 elections. It is
funded, in part, by
labor unions and
Democratic national
organizations and counts
on the trust of
statewide and other
candidates that the
state party will do the
voter outreach necessary
for them to win. In
exchange, the candidates
buy in to help the party
absorb many of their
routine expenses."
"'The campaigns here
literally cede control
of their field
operations,' said Chris
Redfern, Ohio Democratic
Party chairman."
"Kelly referred to it as
'a gravity approach -
the party creates
something real big and
robust and everyone
wants to be part of
it.'"
"Indeed, it is big. With
240 paid employees and a
$20 million-plus budget
for the November
elections, the Ohio
Democratic Party is the
largest state party
organization in the
country. The party has
at least 90 staff
members in 51 field
offices across the
state, including seven
in Franklin County, and
has deployed more than
23,000 activists to
knock on voters' doors,
send out electronic
messages, man phone
banks and distribute
fliers."
"With early voting in
Ohio starting on Sept.
28, Redfern said the
party already has made
hundreds of thousands of
attempts to contact
voters, targeting 'soft
Democrats' and
independents, on behalf
of Strickland and the
rest of the ticket."
…
"In an interview,
keynote speaker Kaine
said the 'Republicans'
cockiness' is misplaced
because voters are
coming to realize that
the GOP has no
solutions. 'They only
thing they're selling is
they're against the
president. They don't
really have an agenda.'"

Congressman
Boccieri: It's Time Everyone
Recognize Women Should Have an Equal
Voice in Our Economic, Political
Life
In response to a defamatory
statement in a Medina County mailer
produced by the Medina County
Republican Executive Committee
against Congresswoman Betty Sutton
(D-Copley), Democratic Congressman
John Boccieri (D-Alliance) condemned
the local GOP Party Chair for
his disregard of women.
"The Medina County Republican Party
Leadership needs to step into the
21st Century. Advising their
followers to "...take Betty Sutton
out of the House and put her back in
the kitchen" is not only offensive
to women everywhere, but disregards
the advancement of women's rights.
"I was proud to stand up for pay
equity as a representative of both
women and men in our district, just
as I was proud to serve in Iraq
alongside our brave men and women in
the military. As a father, I hope my
three daughters grow up in a world
where women are recognized for their
achievements and respected for who
they are and what they’ve done. I
recognize the important role women
play in the workplace; the
sacrifices they make at home and the
great contributions they make in our
society.
"I hope that Congresswoman Sutton,
who continues to make important
contributions to growing jobs in our
region and advancing a clean energy
policy, will serve as a role
model for young women across our
district.
"I condemn the remarks of Medina
County GOP Chairman Bill Heck
because I know they do not represent
the views of women and men in Medina
County, which I am proud to serve
alongside Congresswoman Betty
Sutton.
"I stand by Congresswoman Betty
Sutton and women around our district
and Ohio when I urge the GOP to take
back their regressive comments
against women."

Yost Vows to Continue Mary Taylor's Advice
to Ohio Businesses: Move to Florida
Anti-Jobs, Big Spending Auditor is Not
what Ohio Needs
COLUMBUS – Ohio Auditor candidate David Yost
appears to have launched a new anti-jobs
campaign strategy this week. In a
fundraising letter released by the
Columbus Dispatch, Yost asks
prospective donors to, "Please help me
continue [Republican Lt. Governor candidate]
Mary Taylor's truth-telling mission by
donating to my campaign to succeed her as
auditor of state." The so-called
'truth-telling' he refers to is Taylor's
admission that she counseled Ohio businesses
to move to other states to avoid paying
taxes. [Columbus Dispatch, 7/28/10]
Yost’s rhetoric follows comments he made in
April showing his inability to understand a
successful and widely popular jobs
initiative, the Third Frontier. Yost said
the initiative will "soak up money that is
allocated for bond retirement." The Third
Frontier has created 55,000 jobs in Ohio,
500 new companies, and is projected to bring
$6.6 billion into Ohio's economy. However,
Yost was unable to tell Ohioans whether or
not he supported Third Frontier and dodged
the question by saying that it was not the
topic he was at the event to address that
day. The Third Frontier issue passed at the
ballot by an overwhelming margin in May.
[Toledo Blade, 5/2/10; Plain Dealer, 5/6/10;
Columbus Dispatch, 5/6/10]
The only job David Yost seems to care about
creating is his own, since he has the
audacity to go around the state railing
against government spending even though the
general fund spending of his Delaware County
Prosecutor's Office exploded 150 percent
since the year before he was appointed to
the office.
BACKGROUND
Speaking at a business roundtable discussion
with Congressman Kasich and Indiana Governor
Mitch Daniels, Republican Lt. Governor
candidate Mary Taylor said, "As a CPA,
obviously I spent 16 years working with
businesses, entrepreneurs that were
successful, created a great deal of wealth
for themselves and their families. And you
know, we counseled those individuals to
consider, you know, moving to Florida or
other states..." [Kasich Webcast with Mitch
Daniels, 7/22/10]
When asked at a public forum about the Third
Frontier, Dave Yost said he was unable to
discuss it because he had not studied it
closely. Asked about the Third Frontier,
Yost said, "The Third Frontier is a, uh,
capital improvements project, basically to
pay for through the state budget, it will
not result in new taxes it will soak up
existing money that is allocated for, um,
bond retirement. In other words, as the
bonds cycle forward. And I have not studied
it closely." [Speech, 9-12 Project Event,
4/26/10]
Yost's spending as county prosecutor is
